Australian Jazz Guitarist Bruce Clarke

Bruce Clarke born December 1st, 1925. In 1942 Bruce commenced music, theory and steel guitar lessons at the Melbourne Hawaiian Club. Teacher – Tui Hamilton, a Maori musician.

In 1948 Bruce entered full-time professional music with two important jazz ensembles, one led by Don Banks, the other led by Splinter Reeves and Charlie Blott and particapated in the first Australian modern jazz recordings for the Jazzart label and ABC radio’s first modern jazz broadcasts.

During the period 1950-54 he performed in jazz concerts or tours with Australian and leading overseas musicians including Red Norvo, Herb Ellis, Bud Shank, John Lewis and Gene Krupa. Clarke also performed with the Victorian Symphony Orchestra under Sir John Barbarolli and Sir Charles Mackerras.
